What is Ostomy Surgery? An ostomy is a surgical treatment that will heal the digestive canals disease. This surgery will fabricate an artificial passage for the colon, bladder, or ileum to pass out the waste of the body, including urine, solid stool, and thin stool. A person needs the ostomy in case of bladder, urinary tract, small intestine, large intestine, and bowel infections. A patient can have several problems in the digestive system. So, doctors delete the infected and injured section of the digestive canals, they close the anus (in case of the removal of bowel, rectum, and colon), and construct an anus like a hole on the abdomen of the patient. This opening or stoma on the belly will pass the waste material in the form of feces or urine. Doctors change the internal organs' route, they bring colon, ileum, or urinary canal to the stoma. After this incision, the ostomate (a patient who goes through the ostomy surgery) will eject the solid or liquid waste (depending on the type of ostomy) through the stoma. The ostomy pouching system will collect the waste and the patient will empty the bag. A person will have to clean and wash the pouch, stoma, peristomal skin (skin on the surroundings of the artificial opening fabricated on the belly wall). Well, after the ileostomy and colostomy, the bowel will get connected to the stoma. In the case of rectum and colon removal, the patient will release the feces through the opening; therefore, the ostomate's bowel will show movement naturally, but pass the stool to the new route, called stoma. Bowel Ostomy A patient goes through the ostomy when he/she has injuries, blockages, infections, Crohn's diseases, ulcerative colitis in the small intestine, large intestine, and urinary tracks, rectum cancer, bladder, cancer, and colon cancer. When surgeons make a connection between the colon and stoma, it is a colostomy. In this procedure, they can remove the infected part of the bowel. So, the bowel will move and pass the solid feces through the hole of the belly. In the case of ileostomy, the surgeon will re-route the connection of small bowel and ileum. They bring the ileum to the stoma and it will release the liquid form of stool. This can be thick or thin but in a watery condition. In every situation, the bowel will perform its original function and proceed with the waste to the stoma. The bowel ostomy happens due to the inflammatory bowel disease, When the bowel of the patient cannot perform its function or some part of the bowel gets infected or diseases, then surgeons remove that section of the bowel and make a new road of the internal organs. Well, in some cases, doctors close the anus permanently, but if the disease is minor, then the bowel ostomy will be temporary. So, doctors will reverse the process after the healing of the bowel. What is the Function of Bowel in the Digestive System? The bowel performs the primary function in ejecting solid waste in the human body. It empties the stool through the anal opening. When doctors close the anus and re-route the internal organs, the bowel will release the stool through the stoma. The stoma or belly opening will need a bag to hold, cover, and collect the feces. This is an artificial tool that will pick up the solid waste from your body. An ostomate is the one who will drain and clean the pouch. A patient needs to empty the waste content two to three times a day, depending on the bowel movement and diet routine.s Moreover, the patient is releasing the solid or thin feces, it depends on the location of the stoma and the removed part of the bowel as well. In each case, an ostomate will need a pouching system to collect the waste and safeguard the opening.
